New Threads

Bought this yesterday on impulse - Guterman’s Sulky - some sort of non-cotton, rayon or something.

It is WAY too fine for me at first try, but I am going to tat it again, as I LOVE the look of it.  It is inspired by Snowy’s wonderful fine tatting. She always uses the really skinny stuff.

Love ‘Wildflower' thread!
Thanks Ladytats, for the sample.

I have ordered three new skeins
of this - my new absolute favourite thread.

                                                                     13/100 MC
I was so excited using this wonderful thread that I completely forgot to add the pearl beads in the last four joins!

In spite of the oversight I am enamoured with the look of this thread for tatting.

 Row #10 Begun
Renulek’s Honey Napkin

After tatting with the smaller threads, this feels like a Hudson’s Bay blanket -  dense, heavy and substantial. The doily actually feels more like a crocheted piece than a tatted piece of work; I know this, as I used to crochet those big fancy, old-fashioned doilies.

The Finca thread has a lot of body; it has a three ply loose and shiny twist.

  1. Yum, that Wildflower is gorgeous! Your motif is lovely too, you have such a way with beads. They always seem to overwhelm my stuff but yours are beautiful accents.
The honey napkin is a stunner!!!

  2. Ooh that looks so pretty. How does it compare to the red silk I sent you ages ago, that is the finest stuff I have ever tatted with, and the hardest...oh except once some linen thread that was like barbed wire!
I have used two kinds of Gütermann thread, one much finer than the other.

    1. Thanks, Snowy. That red silk? ( I just recently lost your little, red tatted sample!) Don’t ask! The knots were just awful - the thread was way too fine for me - especially at that time as that was earlier in my tatting career. I might be able to cope now, but that is debatable!

This Guterman thread says #30 on it and is 165 meters/189 yds.

  3. Wow, the wildflower thread is gorgeous. The shades of blue blend so beautifully! Your excellent handiwork shows off the thread nicely, as always.

  4. A doily which has some weight to it is actually very practical, in terms of protecting surfaces. I think thick threads in tating have their place, and I am waiting to see how many balls of Finca your Honey Napkin is going to take! It's absolutely gorgeous and will be a striking centrepiece.

    1. Hi, Maureen,
Well, i think it will only take the two balls of Finca that I began with - one honey and one red. So far I have lots left... and the remaining rows do not appear to demand a lot of thread.

  5. How do you like the Guterman? I've always read that rayon thread is tough to tat with, so I haven't tried. The rayon does have a beautiful sheen, and the colors are so crisp and clean. Dare I try another thread? I do like that Wildflower!

    1. I really like the feel of the Guterman. But un-tatting is not fun, so you have to be very careful. I found it difficult to get regularity with the sizes of the picots, and I made them too big for the size of the thread. But, I liked using it! Feels good in the hand. Not expensive and well worth one spool for a trial tat! Notice I chose a blue colour - no wonder you are tempted... My turn to be an enabler for a change!

    2. Haha! My fear is that I won't be able to stop at one spool of blue!

  6. Wildflowers is my favourite thread! I do love to tat with it, and I've been gradually building my stash. The colours are fabulous.
That guterman thread has such a nice sheen to it. The napkin is gorgeous!

    1. Suz,
I am so happy to hear someone say it is their favourite thread (AND even spell favourite 'correctly!') I just love it and cannot wait for the three new skeins to arrive - of course I don’t know when I shall find the time to use them!

    1. I have no idea! Bought it as a used spool, tried it and then gave it to Snowy, who uses incredibly fine thread. I found it too thin for me to tat with. Sorry, no number....
