Bloomin’ Blomqvist!

#12
Sunflower’ pattern by Blomqvist and Persson,
Tatting Patterns and Designs
Thread is 6-ply #40 Milford

Here it is!

I did it!  I NEVER thought I could figure that pattern out.

The book no longer intimidates me, as I got really bored as I rounded the final ‘stitch.’ Really, I do not like to tat things this large - I usually pick much smaller projects. In my mind this is a ‘real’ doily because of the size; it measures about six inches in diameter.

This work has been claimed by The Boss.

Said I:
But Abby, it isn’t pink.
These aren’t colours you usually pick.

Said Abby, nodding head up and down vigorously:
But, I really like those colours.
I like them a lot.

Best compliment I could ever ask for.

  1. Good taste The Boss has, and it's good that it has a home! I love the outer layer, the way it meanders.

  3. I've always liked that pattern, though I've never tatted it. You've done a beautiful job on it. Using different colors for each round really makes it stand out.

I know what you mean about getting bored. I think a lot of us rarely tat doilies for that reason. But every once in a while, you see one that you just have to make.

That book was the first one I ever got that used "short" notation, and I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, not having to slog through all those long old-style patterns. Now that I have a lot more experience with tatting patterns, I feel that there are places in that book where they should have given more detail, and the lack of diagrams drives me nuts!

  4. Thanks, Miranda!

It took me a long to to get to this intimidating pattern!

I was so involved with getting the pattern right, that I fear my stitching is not very good. It is so inconsistent and the perfectionist in me was not pleased as I looked at the final result. Also, I also used thread colours I do not particularly care for in combination, as they were all that I had in that particular thread. Lizbeth was too twisty for this pattern.

Lack of a diagram drove me crazy as well, and I was too lazy to do it myself!

and since The Boss has claimed it, you are not finished with doilies as Mini Boss and the boys will want one too.

  13. Getting through a large Blomqvist pattern is no small feat. I have the book, but have never tatted from it; even though I really like a lot of the patterns therein (good use of negative space, etc.).

When first I learned to tat, the lady who kindly showed me 'the flip' also freely shared the contents of her considerable tatting library. I remember being both intrigued and amused by the pencil notation on the flyleaf of the Blomquist book: "Instructions are inadequitt!" So, you can be very proud of this one.

    1. Thanks, CT! I am happy to read these words. I am very pleased that I got through it at all, but wish that once I realized what the pattern was that I could have paid more attention to each and every “little soldier!” One day I might have to repeat it, but, honestly, it did get to be rather a chore. 15. Oooh, I love it! You did a fine job of it. The colors remind of the big cut glass bowl of ribbon candy my grandma kept on hand for all of us grandkids.
